But the roofline — specifically your [fascias](/fascias) and [soffits](/soffits) — plays a critical role in keeping your entire roof structure sound. Ignore them, and you're inviting rot, pests, and water damage into your home. ## What Are Fascias and Soffits? **Fascias** are the vertical boards that run along the lower edge of your roof, directly behind the guttering. They support the bottom row of roof tiles and carry the weight of the gutter system. **Soffits** are the horizontal boards that bridge the gap between the fascia and the wall of your property. They enclose the underside of the roof overhang and typically include ventilation to allow airflow into the roof space. ## Why They're More Important Than You Realise ### Structural Protection Fascias protect the ends of your roof rafters from weather exposure.
