Service Overview

## Complete Chimney Repair Services

Your chimney stack sits at the highest point of your roof, fully exposed to wind, rain, frost, and temperature extremes. This constant exposure makes chimneys one of the most common sources of roof leaks across County Durham. Cracked rendering, deteriorating mortar joints, failed lead flashing, loose chimney pots, and damaged flaunching (the cement seal around the pot) are all regular problems we resolve.

Weather Shield Roofing carries out all types of chimney repair work, from minor repointing and reflaunching to complete chimney stack rebuilds. We work on active chimneys (still connected to working fireplaces or boilers), redundant chimneys, and chimney stacks that have been capped or sealed.

Chimney problems often present as mysterious damp patches on internal walls and ceilings — sometimes appearing far from the chimney itself. Water enters through failed mortar, rendering, or flashing, then tracks along roof timbers and masonry before emerging as a stain elsewhere. Accurate diagnosis is essential, and our experience means we trace leaks to their actual source — not just the visible symptom.

We serve properties across [Durham](/areas/durham), [Bowburn](/areas/bowburn), [Lanchester](/areas/lanchester), and all areas of County Durham. Every chimney inspection is free, and we provide honest advice on whether repair or more extensive work is needed.

Why It Matters

## Why Chimney Issues Demand Prompt Attention

Chimney problems escalate faster than most other roofing issues because of the chimney's extreme exposure. Sitting above the ridge line, your chimney catches the full force of every storm, temperature swing, and rain event. In County Durham, that means relentless weathering for decades.

Failed lead flashing — the waterproof seal between your chimney and the surrounding roof — is the single most common cause of chimney-related leaks. When lead flashing lifts, cracks, or loses its mortar pointing, water runs directly down the face of the chimney and into the roof structure. This water damages roof timbers, soaks insulation, stains ceilings, and promotes mould growth.

Deteriorating mortar joints between the bricks of your chimney stack allow rain to penetrate the masonry. Frost then freezes the trapped moisture, expanding and cracking the brickwork further in a process called frost-spalling. Left untreated, this can compromise the structural integrity of the entire chimney stack, creating a genuine safety risk in high winds.

Damaged flaunching — the cement cap around the chimney pot — allows water to enter from above. Loose pots become dangerous in storms. And cracked or blown rendering exposes the underlying brickwork to moisture that it was never designed to absorb. Each of these issues is straightforward to repair when caught early, but expensive and disruptive when neglected.

How We Work

### Guaranteed Workmanship

Every chimney repair comes with a written guarantee. We stand behind our work — your chimney, your peace of mind.

In-Depth Guide

## Chimney Repair Types & Technical Detail

### Lead Flashing Replacement

Lead flashing creates a watertight seal between the chimney stack and the surrounding roof covering. We use code 4 or code 5 milled lead sheet, cut and dressed on-site to fit the exact profile of your chimney. Step flashings, back gutters, and apron flashings are formed and pointed into chased mortar joints using appropriate sealants. Properly installed lead flashing lasts 50+ years.

### Chimney Repointing

[Repointing](/repointing) is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from the joints between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. On chimney stacks, we use a lime-based or NHL (Natural Hydraulic Lime) mortar that allows the masonry to breathe while maintaining weather resistance. Portland cement mortars — too rigid for exposed chimneys — are avoided unless specifically appropriate to the construction.

### Reflaunching

Flaunching is the cement bedding around the base of chimney pots. It sheds water away from the pot and prevents rain entering the flue. Over time, flaunching cracks and separates from the pot. We remove old flaunching, rebed the pot securely, and apply fresh mortar shaped to direct water off the stack.

### Chimney Pot Replacement

Damaged, loose, or missing chimney pots are replaced with appropriate new or reclaimed pots matched to the style of your property. For redundant flues, we fit ventilated caps that allow airflow while preventing rain entry — maintaining the chimney's ventilation function without exposure to water.

### Chimney Rendering

Many chimney stacks across County Durham are rendered (coated with cement or lime render). Cracked, blown, or spalling render allows moisture to penetrate the underlying masonry. We strip failed render, prepare the surface, and apply new breathable render in an appropriate finish to match the existing.

### Chimney Stack Rebuilds

In severe cases — particularly where frost damage, structural movement, or decades of neglect have compromised the brickwork — a partial or full chimney stack rebuild is necessary. We dismantle the damaged section course by course, rebuilding with matching bricks and lime mortar. Rebuilt stacks are fitted with new flashing, flaunching, and pots as part of the project.
