Service Overview

## What Are Fascia Boards and Why Do They Matter?

Fascia boards are the long, straight boards that run along the lower edge of your roof, mounted directly to the ends of your roof rafters. They serve two critical functions: they support the bottom row of tiles and provide a fixing point for your guttering. Without sound fascias, your roof edge is exposed to weather, and your gutters have nothing secure to attach to.

On many older properties across County Durham, fascia boards are made from timber. Over years of exposure to rain, frost, and UV light, timber fascias rot, warp, and deteriorate — often hidden behind paint that disguises the damage until it's advanced. Rotten fascias allow moisture into your roof space, provide entry points for birds and insects, and cause gutters to pull away from the building.

Weather Shield Roofing replaces damaged timber fascias with high-quality uPVC boards that resist rot, require zero maintenance, and are available in a wide range of colours to suit any property style. We supply and fit fascia boards across [Durham](/areas/durham), [Spennymoor](/areas/spennymoor), [Ferryhill](/areas/ferryhill), and all surrounding areas.

Fascia replacement is often carried out alongside [soffit](/soffits) and [gutter](/gutters) work for a complete roofline renovation — improving both protection and kerb appeal in a single project.

Why It Matters

## What Happens When Fascias Are Left to Rot

Rotten fascia boards create a chain reaction of problems. As the timber softens and crumbles, gutter brackets lose their anchor point. Gutters sag, joints separate, and water overflows down your walls. Meanwhile, gaps in the deteriorating fascia allow rain directly into the roof space.

In County Durham's damp climate, this moisture rapidly leads to timber rot spreading into your rafter feet — the most structurally important part of your roof edge. Replacing rafter feet is significantly more expensive than replacing fascia boards alone. Catching the problem early saves hundreds.

Birds, wasps, and rodents exploit gaps in damaged fascias to nest in roof spaces. Once established, pest infestations cause further damage and are costly to remove. The combination of rot, pest damage, and water ingress turns a straightforward fascia replacement into a much larger project.

Many homeowners make the mistake of repainting timber fascias instead of replacing them. Paint conceals the damage temporarily, but once rot has penetrated the timber, no amount of paint will restore structural integrity. If your fascias feel soft when pressed, or if paint is flaking in multiple areas, replacement is the only effective solution.

How We Work

## Our Fascia Replacement Process

1

### Free Roofline Inspection

We inspect your fascias, soffits, and bargeboards around the entire property, checking for rot, damage, and any signs of water ingress or pest entry.

2

### Written Quote with Options

We quote for the work needed, including your choice of uPVC colour and profile. If soffits or gutters also need attention, we'll include those options too.

3

### Remove Old Fascias

Existing timber fascias are carefully removed. We inspect the rafter feet behind them — any rotten timber is cut back and replaced with treated timber.

4

### Fit New uPVC Fascias

New uPVC fascia boards are cut to size, fitted securely to the rafter ends, and all joints are neatly formed. Ventilation slots are incorporated where required.

5

### Refit Gutters & Final Check

Gutters are refitted to the new fascias using correctly spaced brackets. We check alignment, falls, and water flow. All waste is removed from site.

Your Advantages

## Why uPVC Fascias Outperform Timber

### Rot-Proof

uPVC doesn't absorb moisture, making it immune to the rot that destroys timber fascias in County Durham's wet climate.

### Never Needs Painting

Colour runs through the full thickness of the board. No more scraping, sanding, and repainting every few years.

### Instant Kerb Appeal

New fascia boards transform the appearance of your roofline — one of the most visible features of any property.

### Pest-Proof

Tight-fitting uPVC boards seal gaps that birds, wasps, and rodents exploit in deteriorating timber fascias.

### Low Lifetime Cost

Zero maintenance costs over a 20+ year lifespan makes uPVC considerably cheaper than timber in the long run.

### Wide Colour Range

Available in white, black, anthracite grey, rosewood, golden oak, and other finishes to match any property style.

In-Depth Guide

## Fascia Materials, Styles & Specifications

### uPVC Fascia Boards

uPVC fascia boards are manufactured from rigid unplasticised polyvinyl chloride — the same material used for window frames and external cladding. Standard residential fascia boards are 18mm thick and available in widths from 100mm to 405mm. The most common size for County Durham properties is 175mm or 225mm, matching the standard rafter depth on most house types.

### Board Profiles

Fascia boards come in three main profiles: flat board (square edge), bullnose (rounded bottom edge), and ogee (decorative moulded edge). Flat board is the most popular and suits modern and traditional properties alike. Ogee boards add visual interest and work well on period and character properties. We carry all profiles in stock colours.

### Colour Options

The most requested colours in County Durham are white, black, and anthracite grey. Woodgrain finishes — rosewood and golden oak — replicate the appearance of stained timber and suit older properties. All colours are factory-applied and UV-stabilised, so they won't fade, peel, or chalk over time.

### Ventilation

Adequate roof space ventilation is essential for preventing condensation and timber rot. We incorporate ventilation strips or over-fascia vents into all installations where required by building regulations. Continuous ventilation strips run the full length of the fascia, providing the airflow needed without compromising weather resistance.

### Fascias and Soffits Together

Fascias and [soffits](/soffits) are almost always replaced together. The soffit board connects the back of the fascia to the wall, enclosing the underside of the roof overhang. Replacing both at the same time is more cost-effective than doing them separately, as the same scaffolding and access is used.

### Bargeboards

Bargeboards are the fascia equivalent on the gable ends (sloping edges) of your roof. They protect exposed roof timbers on the gable and are replaced using the same materials and methods as fascia boards. We replace bargeboards as part of any complete roofline renovation.
